A Division Bench of the Madras High Court today refused to order a stay Single Judge’s order that the benefits of Entertainment Tax (ET) waiver given to Tamil films should be passed on to viewers.
A petition was moved by advocate K J Saravanan seeking to quash a circular of 6 May, 2014, issued by the Principal Secretary, Commercial Tax and Registration Department, regarding collection of maximum admission rate to Tamil films when there was tax exemption.
The judge directed the government to issue appropriate orders within four weeks to ensure that the tax burden was not passed on to the viewers.
A plea was filed by Inox Multiplex Entertainment seeking a ban on the Single Judge order with a Division Bench.
When the plea came up for hearing, it refused to stay the earlier order and posted the case for further hearing on 18 November.
