What promised aplenty in the trailer and what was touted to be a super comeback of veteran comedian Goundamani, 49O ends up a movie which is neither here nor there. What began with a promise ends up an ordinary fare with too much of mushy and melodramatic elements. The saving grace is perhaps Goundamani. The movie takes a lofty theme to be discussed but events are narrated in an amateurish manner. More of intense script and more reasearch on the issue would have kept the audience engaged. Directed by Arokiyadoss, who worked with Gautham Menon, has come out with a rural unlike his mentor. He has tried to keep it pacy and packed one too many things there. With Goundamani at the sceheme of things, things go relatively well. Goundamani makes his comeback after a long gap. This time as hero. He manages to sustain interest in the movie with his performance. The likes of Nan Kadavul Rajendran and Chaams plays a good part, while Balasingh is also in the cast getting to mdo a meaty role after a long gap. stellar role comical roles that elevates the movie. The movie is set in a village where the farmers are cheated of their lands by greedy politician. Sowri (Goundamani), a famer himself goes hammer and tongs to get his land back. How he does that form the crux. Three cheers to Goundamani who pulls it off quite easily. He is convincing and delivers it with punch. He is at his best and begins from where he left a few years ago. K has scored music while Adhi Karupaiah cranks camera. Producer Dr L Sivabalan has managed to make a movie on a touchy sensitive issue and also something that takes on our current day politicians. With Goundamani at his best, one can watch him and get satisfied. 49 O – Neither here, nor there…
