Kathukutti – Review

Known for his serious portrayals in Chithiram Pesuthadi and Anjathe, Naren takes to play a fun-loving youth in Kathukutti, a rural tale that harps on the need to preserve farming. Directed by scribe-turned-filmmaker saravanan, Kathukutti is set around the lives of farmers in Cauvery delta region. IT speaks about the agrarian woes due to willy real estate agents and greedy politicians. But the director has ensured that Kathukutti is no way preachy. He has managed to lace the movie with commercial elements and it does work to an extent. Narain, Soori and Srushti Dange play lead roles. Soori’s scene presence adds value. His one-liners and comical punchlines does manage to evoke laughter. The young and bubbly Srusthi Dange gets to play a meaty role. She didn’t let go the opportunity and comes up with a good show. The movie speaks about Arivazhagan (Naren). He is a happy-go-lucky youngster in a small village in Thanjavur district. He loves farming and loves to settle down in his own village. He spends all his time with his friend Ginger (Soori). Arivazhagan’s father has political ambitions. But thanks to him, Arivazhagan gets a jackpot. Instead of his father, the ruling party decides to field him as their candidate for by-elections to the constituency. Did he he become MLA and did he fight for the welfare of farmers form the rest. Kathukutty does serves a purpose. The first half is breezy and entertaining but the latter part is touch preachy. All, said, Kathukutti can be overlooked for its content.
