Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam – Review

Gitanjali Selvaraghavan’s directorial debut venture Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam is no doubt bold and also beautiful. The film certified with an ‘A’ certificate stars Wamiqa Gabbi and Balakrishna Kola in lead roles. Amrit has composed the music for the film and the songs have been well received too. The movie is about life changing experience of a man and a woman. It is a bold and emotional movie. Selvaraghavan has written the story and is typical of his style everywhere. The complex emotions of today’s men and women are brought out well in the story. The movie at places go slow, but no dull moments. The reality and fantasy desires of man and woman are brought out well. Amrit has composed the music for the film. The songs does reflect Yuvanshankar of earlier days. They add to the momentum of the movie and what makes the movie more interesting is it never goes preachy. Then movie is about Wamiqa, a girl who has her own principles and ideas. She eventually agrees for traditional we3dding. She is wedded to Balakrishna, A zombie man, he is desisted by her. They hardly get together. They are poles apart. What happens then forms the crux in their lives. The interesting point is the way Geetanjali has managed to extract right emotions and expressions in her emotions. Among the star cast Wamiqa Gabbi and Balakrishna are the stand outs. They liven up the proceedings with their super show. They just do what their director ordered. Balakrishna, son of editor Kola Baskar, does play a super show. Reminding one of Dhanush in his earlier days, Balakrishna with his confused looks does well. Wamiqa is cute and bubbly. She is there delivering her best. Azhagam Perumal does a super show. Sridhar cranks camera and it bright and beautiful. Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam is an interesting film. Perhaps the one for today’s youngsters.
