Tharai Thappattai – Review

A National-award winning filmmaker and a host of talented artistes.

Maestro Ilayaraja composing music and interestingly this happens to be his 1000th music venture.

Movie set in Thanjavur around Karakam artistes. The dying art and the need to revive it. But Bala seems to have rehashed in Tharai Thappatai, his previous bests and provides a staple diet of blood, gore and violence.

Sasikumar and varalaxmi plays a stellar performance. Sasikumar is completely at home in this self-sacrificing character.

Varalaxmi shows that she has in her the best to become a top actress with a solid performance.

R K Suresh plays a baddie and the man has brought out his best and does what Bala wants him to be. Sannasi (Sasikumar) manage a folk artsties group. There is Soorvalli (Varalaxmi), a karakam artiste in it.They manage to get an offer to perform in Anadman. But later they realise that those in Andaman want girls not art.

At one point, Sannasi has to sacrifice Soorvali with whom he is in love with her for her well-being. She marries a big shot. A dejected Sannasi realises little later that all is not well in her family. He goes in her search and on a rescue mission. The rest is violent revenge drama.

It is a wholesome Varalaxmi show. She has done a superb show by her. She is right there delivering her best. Awesome is the word. Sasikumar is tailor-made for the role. He manages to walk a tight-rope and does his best. First time actor R.K.Suresh done the maniacal villain.

Ilayaraja’s songs are okay while BGM is far from expectations. A predictable in the second half, its Bala’s earlier hits revisited.
