CIFF begins with a huge response

Though the inaugural function for the 13th edition of Chennai International Film Festival on Wednesday was was low-key affair, yet movie-lovers and students thronged the venue at Woodlands Theatres in large numbers.

‘We have a great line up of movies this year and are thankful to the government of Tamilnadu and cinema-lovers that we are having a overwhelming reception today.

‘We are glad that the festival was postponed and not cancelled following the deluge in the city during the recent past’, said festival director E Thangaraj.

‘We have opted for quiet inaugural as a tribute to rain victims’, he added.

Deputy director of Indian Panorama Tanu Rai, director of Goethe Institut Helmut Schippert, Nadigar Sangam treasurer Karthi and secretary Ponvannan, president of Tamil Film Directors Association Vikraman, actress Suhasini Maniratnam among others present during the ceremony.

Schippert introduced the award winning German movie Victoria, the inaugural film of the festival.

More than 800 registered delegates have confirmed their participation in the festival in which around 183 films from 50 countries including 20 Oscar nominated movies will be screened.
