Amma Kanakku - Review

How much would a mother bend down to bring up her children is the crux of the movie Amma Kannakku, that is directed by Ashwini Iyer Tiwari. A remake of the Hindi movie, Nil Battey Sannata, it is centered around a single mother played by Amala Paul and how she manages to give her daughter a decent life, yet make her know the struggles she undergoes. It also brings out how at times children as so blind that they do not realise the sacrifice their parents do for them. Yuvasri is a Class 10 student. She wants to give up studying as she knows that her mother, Amala Paul, who is a house-help, will not be able to support her for higher education. However, Amala Paul has different aims, she wants her daughter to study and become a doctor or engineer. Several attempts by Yuvasri's mother to convince her to study hard goes in vain. She even tries to enrolled her for maths tuition. To change her perspective of life, Amala Paul (who has not completed class 10) enrolls into school. Apparently, she becomes her daughter's classmate. The conflicts increases between the mother and daughter. A lady doctor (Revathy) is a constant support for Amala Paul. Revathi plays a serious role where she becomes a mother, a friend and a guide to Amala Paul. Maths teacher cum school headmaster (Samuthirakani), is another key character in the movie. He keeps motivating the characters in the film. But his mannerisms divert the attention from the story. This is the first time Amala Paul has done a character role, that is well beyond her age. She suits the role well. At places, the mother and daughter look similar, like sisters, when they wear a uniform or so. Ilaiyaraja's BGM to be mentioned as usual, because no one matches his re-recording. Gavemic U Ary's cinematography travelling along with the story. Produced by Colour Yellow Pictures and Wunderbar Films, Amma Kanakku expresses a strong mother-daughter bond that is everlasting.
