144 - Review

27 Nov 2015
144 by newcomer Manikandan is a fun-filled film that is set around two villages where there is 144 clamped. What a bunch of thieves try to achieve in the confusion forms the crux. C V Kumaran's Thirukumaran Entertainments have the knack of picking unique scripts and in the past they had made movies that were out of the box. The production venture rolled out quality fare in Soodhu Kavvum, Jigarthanda, Pizza, Indru Netru Naalai among others in the past. Though 144 is not in the same league, it ends up an entertainer. The clash between two villagers where curfew is imposed forms the crux. Shiva dons the role of a comical thief while Ashok Selvan plays a race driver. Sruthi Ramakrishna, Oviya and Mundasupatti Ramadas among others form part of the cast. Music is by Sean Roldon. Erimalaikundu and Poomalaikundu villages in Madurai have all troubles in store fr them especially during festive occasions annually. 144 is clamped during festive days there. Seizing the opportunity, a few try to achieve their means. There is romance and little emotion between them. There is unlimited laugh but they are logic less. But the problem is when Manikandan tries to quick fix the same with some logic in second half, the movie goes slow. Mirchi Shiva as petty thief walks away with all honours. His one-liners are nice and catchy. His body language provides abundant humour. Ashok Selvan uses the opportunity given to him well, while the leading ladies are okay. Sean Roldon's songs are okay. On the whole, 144 is a fun-filled entertainer that provides abundant laughter in the first half. Fun time pass indeed. 144 - Fun is the word
