Devi - Review

Actor-choreographer Prabhudeva is back into Tamil films with Devi. Directed by Vijay the flick, a horror genre, has Prabhudeva, Sonu Sood and Tamannaah in lead roles. RJ Balaji, Sathish, Nassar, Murali Sharma and Abijith Paul, who is Amala Paul's brother play supporting roles. Actress Amy Jackson has played a guest appearance. Devi revolves around the life of Krishna (Prabhudeva). He is working in Mumbai and wants to marry a modern girl. However, luck has it that he ends up marring a simple village girl named Devi (Tamannaah). Well, adjusting to his new life, Krishna brings his new wife to live with him to Mumbai. As days follows, Krishna seeing abnormal behaviour in Devi. He finds out that she is possessed by a girl named Ruby, who has unfulfilled desires of becoming an actress. Ruby begins to use Devi’s body to satisfy her dreams. She will sign a film opposite to actor Rajiv (Sonu Sood) and thus begins the story. What happens next forms the rest. Vijay has managed to enthrall audience with a good screenplay that is laced with horror and comedy in right mix. It is nice to see Prabhudeva back on screen after a long gap. The actor has not lost his charm and his dancing skills is still able to hold one their breath. Tamannaah in a ghost role is good. She transcends between roles of being possessed and not. There are two sides to her role that has been done well by the actress. Sonu Sood has done his part well, although the actor is in an unfamiliar ground, K'town. Sathish and R J Balaji gives some relief. Camera angles by Manush Nandan and music has added more flavour to the whole riot. Prabhudeva pulls it well. But sadly the hangover of watching Hindi film is prevalent all through. And Director Vijay sadly has recycled scenes that won laurels in similar genre of films. Struck between comedy and eerie thrill, he seems to have come a cropper in few places. Again the story line is far too predictable.
