Appa Movie Review

01 Jul 2016

In the lines of Amma Kanakku comes Samuthirakani's Appa. A drama that is based on fathers and sons, the movie is told in the perspective of children. Revolving around three dads, the movie emphasis the fact that fathers should motivate children in what they like and never force their own ideas on them. Samuthirakani, Thambi Ramiah and Namo Narayanan play the role of father. The lives of their children are filled with innocence and exuberance. But aspirations of their fathers come as a road block for these kids. Samuthirakani allows his son to chase his dreams, while the other fathers have their own set of rules. They are constantly at the back of their children. If one whips his son to score marks in academics, the other becomes the reason of this child to grow up timid. What repercussions their acts have on their children's future make up the story. The cast also includes Vinodhini, Preethi, Vela Ramamurthy, Vignesh and Raghav in supporting roles. Written, directed, produced and starring Samuthirakani, the movie talks tough on the education system and how parents too run behind marks. It talks in length the lost dreams and childhood of kids in this race for marks. A not so preachy movie, the first half just sails by, with lots of entertainment provided by the children and their parents. The second half gets a little serious. Here is where the maker talk about lost dreams and childhood. He also emphasis that children tend to look beyond their orginaility and become victims in the rat race of money. Samuthirakani's role as a father is upto the mark. Thambi Ramiah and Namo Narayanan depict how many fathers are in the society. They bring out the right emotions of fathers. Ilayaraja's music is an added strength to the movie. Already heartening, the background score makes one cry. Said to be inspired from a real life incident, Appa is a good watch.
