Kadhalikka Neramillai - Review

Kadhalikka Neramillai is a film with multiple layers. For viewers who have the patience and ability to explore its depth, the movie offers several thought-provoking ideas and can be deeply rewarding. For others, it may come across as a simple, light-hearted romantic drama.  

Director Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi’s Kadhalikka Neramillai is true to its title, which translates to “No Time for Love.” The story primarily revolves around Shreya (Nithya Menen) and Siddharth (Ravi Mohan), both scarred by their first romantic relationships, which have left a lasting impact on their trust in the opposite gender.  

The narrative initially presents itself as the story of two individuals but, in reality, focuses largely on Shreya. Siddharth, despite being abandoned at the altar by his would-be bride, comes across as forgiving and accommodating. Therefore, it would not be entirely accurate to say that his trust in the opposite gender is completely shattered.  

Shreya, on the other hand, is resolute in her decision to stay away from men after her boyfriend cheats on her with her best friend. This betrayal leaves her deeply hurt, but over time, she develops a longing for a child after seeing a relative with a baby. Shreya then comes to the realization that she can have a child without needing a man in her life. Her decision to exclude men from the family equation aligns with her independence, and she chooses to become a single working mother.

Meanwhile, Siddharth, who had been disinterested in marriage or parenthood following his humiliation, finds himself drawn to Shreya. He is captivated by her intelligence and brilliance after attending one of her presentations. However, their differing priorities in life lead Shreya to reject the idea of a relationship. The film takes an interesting turn eight years later when their paths cross again, exploring what unfolds next in their lives.

Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi deserves credit for addressing themes that are rarely explored in Tamil cinema. She raises pertinent questions about relationships, independence, and societal norms. However, instead of delving deeply into these topics, she opts for a lighter narrative tone, which makes the film more accessible and entertaining.  

Ravi Mohan delivers a brilliant performance as Siddharth. His portrayal is sincere and nuanced, showcasing his talent and discipline as an actor. However, one gets the sense that he is yet to find a role that fully utilizes his potential. Nithya Menen is flawless as Shreya, embodying her character with authenticity and charm.  

The casting is another strength of the film. Vinay Rai, who plays a gay character, fits seamlessly into his role. Yogi Babu, as the conservative friend in Siddharth’s circle, brings humor and relatability. T J Bhanu, portraying Siddharth’s ex-girlfriend, also adds depth to the story with her performance.  

Kadhalikka Neramillai is a film that works on multiple levels. It offers meaningful ideas for those willing to engage with its themes, while also functioning as an enjoyable romantic drama for casual viewers. Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi has successfully balanced humor, drama, and introspection, making this film a delightful watch for a wide range of audiences.
